I was so nervous to try this recipe, but it worked great! I used 1-1/2 cups all purpose flour, 1/2 cup wheat flour and butter flavored shortening (all I had). I made them thin and about 6-7" getting about 12. When rolling them out, if you roll up and down then move the tortilla a few inches clockwise and roll up and down again and keep doing this, it stretches the dough and makes circles easy. All of mine were circular and it was my first time, so it does work :) Thanks so much for broadening my horizons!

This was not as hard to do as I thought it would be. The dough definitely needs to rest. Even then, it was still hard to roll into a nice circle, but so what if they aren't completely round.

Big hit with the family. Made them with home ground whole wheat, and while they were a bit grainy they turned out great!

this does make acceptable tortillas but i found it really hard to work with the dough and also could not get it to roll thin enough so i only got 4 tortillas out of this. if i had a big heavy rolling pin instead of a sad little wooden one it might have worked better. i found the dough too dry to knead and have it stay together so i added a bit more water but that made it coated in glue so i had to add more flour. might have been better if i'd added a little under a 1/4 cup extra water in with the rest of it or a touch more baking powder so it rose a little more during resting and would be easier to roll out. i might make this again but i don't know that it's worth an hour's effort to save $3.50

The dough was very hard to work with and it wasn't possible for me to roll it out very thin, but the taste was good and it worked well for sandwich wraps.

Good recipe!! Lots better than store bought. I had trouble getting them thin enough, it seemed no matter how thin I rolled then, they still seemed thicker than prepackaged shells. My only problem with these was once they sat in the bag for a while they seemed to look undercooked ( even though they didn't look like that when I was done cooking them). They did stay soft so I guess that was a plus! Thanks for a great recipe.

07/11/09: This is pretty close to how I make tortillas only I use 1/2 tsp salt and 1 1/2 tsp baking powder. They come out a little thick, which is just how I like them. Thank you for posting a great recipe! 02/27/10: Yesterday I made a triple batch to feed 10 people. The original recipe makes 8-10 tortillas. This was a huge hit, even if they weren't very round. :)

I made these tonight for burritos, using vegetable oil instead of shortening since I didn't have enough shortening, and I didn't quite use all the water. I made them in a stainless steel frying pan over medium-high heat, and it worked just fine. I must say, they were pretty easy to make and well worth it. All it takes is a good non-stick surface (although the dough was never that sticky to begin with) and some patience for rolling the dough. Other than that, it's a snap. Since my vision isn't all that good, I tested for flip-readiness by sliding a spatula under the sides of the tortilla while cooking. When it let go of the pan, it was ready to flip. I meant to take pictures, but they got gone too quick. They were just that good!

they tasted good..but the texture was not what I was looking for...I wanted soft pillowy chewy tortillas like my auntie used to make...these were very dense and cracked when folded...I'm sure it was my fault though, I've never made any sort of bread that wasn't dense, no matter how hard I try to be sure its not over worked. =( I guess I'm doomed to store bought breads.

Loved the ease of this recipe. I made half a recipe and got 4 tortillas. Very easy and good flavor. Served with Pollo Con Salsa Verde (Chicken With Green Sauce).

I can not believe I have not rated this recipie. I make these all the time. Perfect for our family. I even use white spelt flour for mine. We had a couple over for dinner tonight and they were so impressed that I made homemade tortillas. These are so easy and so good. I have no reason to ever look for another tortilla recipie.

We made these for supper a couple nights ago. We added some extra spices and had to add some extra water to get them to roll out. My hubby did the rolling, hard work but well worth it. We will add this one to the book to make again. Thank you!

I made these last night for chicken tacos. I was very pleased at how easy they were and it made just enough for DH and me. I will be using this one from now on.

This was the first time I have ever made homemade tortillas and they were great!!! My husband said that I dont need to buy the store bought ones anymore. :) Very, very good! We had them with fajitas and they stood up great.

Made this to use in burrito casserole. Kids loved snacking on them as I grilled them. Easy enough to make every day!!! Great tasting. This recipe makes the store bought tortillas taste like wallpaper paste!!

I'll never buy tortillas again. I find these are best if I heat/cook them on my electric griddle.

I got a craving for a steak and egg breakfast taco, since I had leftover steak. However, I didn't have any tortillas! I NEVER have shortening or lard, on hand, so I looked for a recipe, using oil. This one turned out great! I cut the recipe in 1/2 (since it was just for me, and just for breakfast), and they worked perfectly. I stacked my cooked tortillas in foil, as I feel that hot things put in plastic taste like plastic, and they steamed each other and stayed very pliable. They were, IMHO, not quite as tasty as those in a Mexican restaurant, but (of course) I didn't expect them to, since I didn't use lard...duh! Thanks for saving my craving!
