Plain biscuits can be delicious with butter and a little homemade jam!!
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1⁄4 cup shortening or 1⁄4 cup margarine
- 1 cup milk or 1 cup buttermilk
- Mix together flour, baking powder and salt.
- Cut in shortening with 2 knives or a pastry blender, until mixture is the consistency of coarse cornmeal.
- Make a well in the centre of these ingredients, add liquid slowly.
- When all the liquid has been added, stir dough rather vigoroursly until it comes freely from the side of the bowl.
- Turn dough onto lightly floured board and knead lightly for a few minutes.
- Roll or pat out to desired thickness, about 1/2 inch.
- Cut dough with 2 inch floured biscuit cutter, or floured open end of glass, place on ungreased baking sheet.
- Bake in a hot oven 450 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes.
these were excellent. I used whole wheat pastry flour, buttermilk, and butter instead of shortening. I made 1/3 of the recipe and added raisins to some of the biscuits, which yielded 4 raisin and 2 regular biscuits. Instead of flattening them, I formed them into balls and so they baked into puffs. Thanks for the recipe, I'll definitely be making these again!
These were good! I cut out heart shapes for the kids for Valentine's Day. I also cut out some maple leafs, in honour of the Olympics, and spread raspberry jam over them while they were still a bit warm so it ran down the sides better. A great ode to Canada for the kids!
These were fast, simple and delicious! I'll definitely be making them when I need something to add to a meal in a hurry!
