Tater Tots Casserole

"I got this recipe from a casserole cookbook. The original recipe does not call for onions, but I find that the onions are a great addition. I usually add the onions to the ground beef and cook both together in the same skillet."

Questions & Replies

  1. Instead of using cream of celery soup, could you use cream of potato or cream of chicken soup.

  2. Do you think you could add mozzarella cheese instead of cheddar and mushroom soup and this would taste good

  3. How many tater tots? No amount listed in recipe.

  4. If you're using tater tots do you cook them ahead of time or add them frozen? Never mind. Missed that part in the ingredients somehow.

  1. Surprisingly delicious! I wasn't too sure what to expect from this simple recipe but the result was tasty, filling, yummy! I added a teaspoon of garlic salt to the meat, 2 stalks of chopped celery to the chopped onion (which I sauteed in olive oil) and I added a few spoonfuls of milk to the soup. I baked the whole shibang in my 9X9 square Pyrex baking dish and it came out perfect!. We'll definately make this again.

  2. 4 stars ONLY because I didn't follow this exact recipe. I doubled the beef, added pepper, garlic powder and a little bit of Mrs. Dash to drained beef. Used two cans of cream of mushroom, added mixed vegetables to the soup/beef mix, topped with tater crowns and added an 8oz pack of cheddar to the top. It is sooooo good! I'm pleasantly surprised! So easy too! My teenage daughter could make this by herself!

  3. I have been making this for years but I use cream of mushroom. Add a dollop of sour cream with a side of grean beans.

  4. This was great! My entire family loved it. I doubled everything and one of the cans of soup I used was cream of celery (the other cream of chicken.) If you're going to double it use a 9x13" pan.

  5. very good!! cheap, easy to make and very tasty! I made a few minor adjustments..used cream of chicken instead of celery, also added sm amount of chili powder to the beef while i was browning it..we like things spicy and i ended up layer the tots..put a layer down, then the meat, then a top layer of tots..turned out great!! sent some of it with my sister as she went back to college

  2. I grew up with this too. I use 1 pkg. onion soup mix instead of the fresh onion and do not put cheese on it either. Always a favorite.

  3. My husband had a roommate in college that made tater tot casserole. I often heard about how delicious this casserole was, but I never attempted to make it. 10 years later, I finally decided to give it a try! He was very pleased to have this old favorite again! I seasoned the ground beef with salt and pepper to taste, and used cream of mushroom soup instead of celery (didn't have the celery on hand). Delicious, family pleasing recipe. Thanks!

  4. Our family really liked this a lot. Next time I may use cream of chicken soup instead. I added a can of drained french style green beans. Very yummy comfort food.
