On taste alone, these were probably only a 4 but due to the ease of changing the serving size, I added an additional star. I only wanted a small snack, so I used 1 TBLS of each item. This was so rich, just that small amount fixed my chocolate craving. I also subbed quick oats for the flour and flax seed for the sunflower seed. I will fix this often when the ugly chocolate craving monster rears its ugly head! Thanks for posting!

This is such a versatile recipe and I love that it is full of good ingredients and can be made even more healthful if you want. I use a lot of ground flax seeds in my recipes and substituted 1/4 cup of ground flax for half of the flour. Used non-hydrogenated natural peanut butter, and ground hazelnuts instead of the sunflower seeds because that's what I had on hand. I bought a bag of ground hazelnuts at Trader Joe's a while ago and have been wondering what I was going to do with them. Using walnuts would increase the omega 3's considerably. If you used walnuts AND flax seeds you would have incredibly healthy little omega 3 balls. I rolled some in ground hazelnuts, some in ground flax, and some in wheat germ. All are good and it's just a matter of preference which one you like best. Ground peanuts would also be good since they contain peanut butter. I would like these just a tad sweeter so will adjust accordingly next time. You could make wonderful rum balls with this recipe and get a good dose of healthy stuff along with your booze! Great recipe that will be fun to experiment with. I wonder if you omitted the flour altogether and substituted ground walnuts or flax seeds you could fit a couple of these into South Beach? Wishful thinking? As is I give them 4 stars but with changes to suit our taste more they will be 5 stars. I'm glad I found this recipe.

Very interesting recipe. I'm giving them four stars for ease of preparation, good taste and great potential. Made as the recipe directs, they were not really sweet enough for my taste, but I think I could add some Splenda to the mixture to take care of that.

Sign in or create an accountI changed this so much the first time to accommodate what I had on hand that I don't want to rate it (even though my changes worked out fairly well). But I do want to mark it for later to make right!

After reading several excellent reviews for this recipe, I've been eager to make these for awhile now. I followed the recipe exactly and added 1/4 quick oats... had my hubby try them first, he said they were awful! I tried one... a little too much cocoa taste for me. So, I added coconut... still not very good. I read a few more reviews, determined to like these highly rated snacks! I added a little dark rum and rolled them in powdered sugar... better but still not great. I'm so bummed! I'm going to take them to our dinner party tonight and see what people think. Maybe it's just our taste. ;-)

I feel that the balance in this recipe isn't quite right. I could tell halfway through combining ingredients that with a 1/2 cup of honey and/or syrup and pb that there are not enough liquid ingredients to account for all of the dry. As a result, I has to use 1/4 cup cocoa and 1/4 cup of sunflower seeds and the wheat germ didn't stick so well on the outside. I used a TBSP of flax seed in place of some of the wheat germ. Very delicious. The syrup (mine on the thin side), honey (mine was VERY thick), and pb consistencies will play a big role in how this works though so pay attention as you're mixing. I also find the calorie and fat info on this recipe hard to believe from reading my ingredient labels. Careful with thinking it's really healthy being so high calorie!

We liked these, and I don't feel bad letting the kids have more than one because they are healthy! We used agave nectar instead of maple syrup and rolled them in wheat germ and unsweetened finely grated coconut. Thank you for sharing, we will make this again and again.

These are pretty good. They are a little dry though. I used all maple syrup, but next time I think I'll try using half syrup and half honey. What a nice, healthy snack!

Reviews were all over the map with these tasty treats. For the sweet tooth people, maybe not sweet enough, but that didn't stop them from going back for more! Everyone else thought they were wonderful, not too sweet but that's what was nice about it. I personally enjoyed the cocoa. I used a smooth peanut butter (not natural...) and whole wheat flour. Easy easy! tasty healthy treats, thanks.

Easy to make no bake dessert/snack. Very nutty taste, rich treat without being overly sweet. I like the easy measurements too...just equal parts of all ingrediants!

So yum! I loved these balls! I only had golden syrup tho. I also used the full quantity of sunflower seeds but used 1/2 toasted wheat germ and 1/2 toasted coconut flakes....so divine! I also rolled them in a mixture of toasted wheat germ and coconut. Thank you for posting the recipe!

These are really yummy! I've already made them 3 times in the last month for various get-togethers. The first time I made them I followed the recipe exact except used 1/4 cup sunflower seeds and added 1/4 cup coconut. It tasted great but wasn't quite sweet enough for my taste. Now I do the same thing but roll the balls in powdered sugar after they sit for about 10 minutes and it's fantastic! Thanks for the terrific and easy recipe!

I will refrain from rating this recipe because our "Things" were awful. I think the awful flavor came from untoasted wheat germ, though. Toast your wheat germ if not already toasted!

Really Yummy! Just wondering what could be substituted for the peanut butter, because my kids are not supposed to take anything peanutty to school because of allergies at the school

I didn't have sunflower seeds or wheat germ, so I substituted chopped almonds and ground flax seed instead. I then rolled the balls in finely ground almonds. These were great, very fudgy tasting!! So quick and easy - I'm sure we'll be making them often.
