  1. Sift flour with cocoa, soda, cinnamon. baking powder, and salt.
  2. Cream shortening; add sugar gradually, creaming together until light and fluffy.
  3. Add egg, beating thoroughly.
  4. Combine buttermilk, coffee, and vanilla.
  5. Add flour mixture to egg mixture, alternating with liquid, beating after each addition until smooth.
  6. Pour batter into a well greased and floured 9-inch square pan.
  7. Bake in moderate oven (350°F) for 35 minutes or until cake springs back when lightly touched.
  8. Cool.
