Tamale Pie With Cornmeal Cheese Crust

"This is a simple yet delicious tamale pie dish that will satisfy even the hungriest people. My whole family loves it. You can use beef instead of ground turkey if you want too. Tastes great with ground turkey though. Enjoy!"

  • Heat oven to 350°F
  • Combine cornmeal and sugar; stir in 1 cup of cheese, milk, egg and oil. Stir just until moistened.
  • Press mixture on bottom and up sides of 9" pie plate sprayed with non-stick cooking spray.
  • In 10 inch skillet, cook ground turkey, green pepper, onion, garlic and jalapeno pepper over medium heat until turkety is no longer pink. Drain. Stir in tomato sauce, corn, chili powder, cumin and cayenne pepper.
  • Spoon turkey mixture into cornmeal crust.
  • Bake at 350F, 30-35 minutes.
  • Remove from oven; sprinkle with 1 cup cheese. Return to oven and bake until cheese melts.
  • Let stand 5 minute before serving.
  • Serve with sour cream and salsa if desired.

  1. I thought this was an ok dish. If I were to make it again I would probably double the chili powder, cumin, and cayenne to give it more flavor.
     
  2. This was a very good tamale pie! I just found that it needed some salt and after I sprinkled some on, it was much better. So next time I'll add about a half teaspoon of salt to the meat and a half teaspoon for the crust. I made as posted, except I used 1 pound ground beef, omitted the jalapeno and added an extra 1/8 of cayenne pepper. This was very tasty and satisfied our hunger. Thanks for posting Judy!
