I tagged this recipe for the Chef Alphabet Soup game, which means that I pledged to make the recipe and review it. At first glance, the recipe seems to have a lot of possibilities. It was only after I read it more carefully, preliminary to making the bread, that I realized the unusual aspects of this recipe. It contains no sugar or other sweetener, and only the fat in the sour cream. Of course, it is possible to make bread without sugar or any fat at all, if what you want is French bread. However, this recipe contains some quite sour ingredients, the orange zest and cranberries. I personally do not believe that the sweet potato can make up for any extra sugar. So, I tasted the dough and added about 1/4 cup sugar. (BTW, I made this by hand.) The dough also seemed very dry and I added an egg, too. Even so, the total amount of flour called for was not needed. I was able to get some moderately tasty bread after my alterations, but cannot imagine what I would have gotten if I had just put everything into the bread machine. The cookbook cited is a reputable one. I kind of wonder if one or two ingredients were not copied.
