From a church recipe book I found at a yard sale; I think these are perfect for Thanksgiving!

  1. Preaheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Sift flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Cut the butter and shortening into the flour mixture until it looks like coarse meal.
  4. In a small mixing bowl, mix the buttermilk and sweet potato together, then stir into the flour mixture until combined well. (It will be wet.).
  5. Turn dough out onto well-floured surface and knead until it comes together, about 3-5 minutes.
  6. Roll out to about a 1/2 inch thickness and cut with a 2-inch biscuit cutter. Place in parchment lined pan.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden brown, and while still hot brush with melted butter.
