Sweet and Sour Smoked Sausage

I decided that I needed to share this recipe after two people came into our break room tonight to see what I was eating that smelled so good. The recipe is adopted from a woman I work with, she calls it "Party Kielbasa". I like using turkey smoked sausage, but it works well with either smoked sausage or kielbasa. I brown the sausage in a frying pan with the Liquid Smoke before I bake it, because I like it to be a little bit crunchy on the outside, but you can just throw it all together without browning it, it tastes good either way. I serve it over rice because it soaks up the juice nicely. It could probably be a crockpot recipe in the summer, but I like baking it in the winter.

Directions

  1. Mix the chili sauce, canned crushed pineapple with juice, and the brown sugar together in a large casserole dish (I use the stoneware from my crockpot).
  2. Add the bell pepper pieces and smoked sausage.
  3. Mix everything together.
  4. Bake uncovered at 350 for one hour, stirring occasionally.
  5. Enjoy!

Great recipe, so easy and quick to put together. Tonight will be our 2nd time making it, even our fussiest ones enjoyed it. My husband loves things to be spicy so I did add some cayenne pepper to spice it up some more. Thank you.

I just made this for my husband and our two housemates. "It was a homerun!" was an actual quote from my husband... that's a rarety out of his mouth when it comes to my cooking. I added carrots and onions to the vegetable list and served over rice with a side of eggroll. I'd make it again in a heartbeat, cheap, easy and delicious!

I thought these had a great flavor to them, not too sweet, even with the pineapple and the brown sugar. I didn't use the liquid smoke, but otherwise followed the directions as written. I served mine with noodles, but think it would have been even better over rice. Will definitely make this again!
