Sweet and Sour Cherry Sparkler

"By Maureen Petrosky of TheKitchn.com and published in the Sunday paper. The nutritional information will be wildly off, as you make far more syrup than you need for a single drink. You can use a vanilla, cherry or whipped cream vodka instead of plain vodka."

directions

  • Syrup: In a small saucepan, heat the water, sgar and cherries until the sugar has completely melted.
  • Using a potato masher, smash the cherries.
  • Strain through a fine mesh strainer and cool over an ice bath, or in the fridge if making ahead.
  • Drink: In a small jam jar filled with ice, add the vodka, lemon juice and cherry simple syrup. Place the lid on and shake.
  • Remove the lid, fill with club soda and garnish as desired.
  • Note:The author likes to serve from jelly jars. I would probably use a cocktail shaker and pour into a glass.

  1. Such an enjoyable cocktail….has the perfect tartness and not too sweet, but just right. It’s so pretty too. Next time I think I may try to cook the cherry simple syrup to concentrate the cherry flavor a tad, but it was all very good as written. Thank you, duonyte, for sharing. Made it for FYC.

  2. This is such a great drink. When I topped it off with Club Soda, it fizzed and sparkled for a few seconds, and I thought the drink's name was so appropriate. I had a hard time finding cherry simple syrup and looked for more than 2 weeks before I gave finding it in the store. So I made my own using fresh Bing cherries, and it was easy and gave me enough cherry simple syrup to last a few weeks. Thanks for sharing your recipe, duonyte. This is one to (hopefully) remember for next year's 4th of July picnic!!

My screen name is a diminutive in Lithuanian for bread, so you won't be suprised to learn that I love to bake bread. In recent years I have been baking a lot of sourdough breads and have several starters sitting in my refrigerator. But I like to cook a lot of other things, as well, especially from various cultures.
