Sweet and Sour Cabbage and Apple Skillet

- 4 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons onion flakes
- 2 lbs red cabbage, chopped
- 1 teaspoon ground cloves
- 2 teaspoons ground allspice
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1⁄4 cup red wine vinegar
- 3⁄4 cup hot water
- 6 tart apples, cored and chopped
directions
- In a large frying pan, melt butter and sauté onion until it begins to brown.
- Add cabbage and toss. Add spices, salt, sugar, and vinegar and toss. Add water.
- Cover pan and let simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add apples.
- Cover and continue cooking for about 20 minutes longer, until cabbage and apples are tender. Remove lid and taste; adjust sugar and spices to taste.
- Continue simmering uncovered to cook off all liquid in the bottom of the pan. Serve warm.

I can't stop eating it, and I've eaten myself into a food coma. <br /><br />4 Stars The recipe is wonderful as is. I can't think of a single improvement and I will most likely make it again. <br /><br />3 Stars This needed a little *something*something*. I might make it again, but will add my own improvements if I do. <br /><br />I love to eat! And I love to cook. I tend to take over the kitchen when I get in there.
