A very tasty dish, easy to put together and good enough for company. Nearly cooks itself :)
- 750 g steak, large dice (topside or blade)
- 75 g butter
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 400 g pineapple chunks (drained)
- 1 medium onion
- 420 g vegetable soup (undiluted)
- 1⁄2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1⁄2 cup vinegar (I use white, brown or cider, whatever I have )
- 250 g fresh bean sprouts (or one can, drained)
- 1 tablespoon flour, in 1/4 cup water (I use corn flour)
- In a large heavy pan, brown the meat in the butter, turn down the heat and add the onion (chopped).
- Cook till the onion is soft.
- Add the soup, sauces, sugar and vinegar.
- Add salt and pepper is desired.
- Cover and cook slowly for 90 minutes.
- Add drained pineapple and sprouts.
- Thicken with flour and water mix if desired.
- Serve with rice or noodles.
this was really great and very easy didn't put in the sprouts but we didn't miss them. I will be cooking this one again as you said it cooks itself.
This was a very nice meal. DH was impressed. When I asked him how many stars he would give it, he said 4-7/8th. :) I thought is was a bit too sweet, so I'll reduce the sugar next time. The meat was oh so tender. Great flavour too. I didn't add the bean sprouts because 'He' wouldn't eat them. Other than that, the recipe was made as written. You could easily add some red, green and yellow bell peppers at the end to brighten it up. All in all, we had a wonderful supper tonight. Thanks Mummamills. Made for Auzzie/NZ Recipe Swap #25..
Made for Aus/NZ Swap #18 A really tasty, easy to prepare dish ! I had about 2 pounds of stew beef, continued with directions as listed. Wasn't sure about the vegetable soup -- ready to eat or canned concentrate ? Went with Progresso Minestrone (vegetable) soup, ready to eat. Also was not sure of vinegar, but used cider rather than white. DID find fresh mung sprouts in the organic section of the super. Cooked on low for 90 minutes (a rather healthy "simmer" ) before adding canned pineapple and sprouts. I did not think it needed to be thickened. Boiled Asian wide wheat noodles, and served beef on top. It was a VERY interesting combination of flavors -- almost different with each bite -- some more sweet, some really tart. Since there are just 2 of us -- have sufficient for another meal. DH REALLY enjoyed this, since I do not usually prepare such "flavorful" dishes. Thanks, mummamills, for posting.
