I made half the recipe. I soaked and cooked the peas for 1 hour, then put them along with ham scraps, onion, ginger and pepper in my 1 1/2 qt crockpot for 3 hours. I did not salt because I served this the way my mom fed it to me when I was growing up, garnished with a big scoop of sauerkraut. If you've never had it this way you should give it a try!   1. Soak peas overnight and drain.
  2. Put in cold water and boil one hour.
  3. Skim carefully.
  4. Add seasonings, onions and meat and boil until peas are done.
  5. Remove meat when done and slice; serve separately.
  6. Note: Cook time depends on how well done you like your peas.
