Sugar Cookies With Icing

"These are so yummy, I use different cookie cutters for each season, (Valentines day hearts are my favorite) they are beautiful, and are never around long enough to see how they age."

  • Cream shortening; gradually add sugar, beating until fluffy.
  • Add eggs and vanilla; mix well.
  • Combine dry ingredients; add to creamed mixture, mixing well.
  • Divide dough in half; wrap in wax paper, chill at least one hour.
  • Roll half of dough to 1/4 inch thick on a lightly floured surface; keep remaining dough chilled. Cut dough with a cookie cutter.
  • Place on lightly greased cookie sheet; bake at 350 for 12 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.
  • Cool on wire rack.
  • Cream butter; graduallly add sugar, beating until blended. Add milk and vanilla, mixing until smooth, Stir in food coloring, if desired.
  • Spread on cookies.

  1. These are great cookies. I'm not very talented at rolled cookies, but I was able to make some very nice cookies with this recipe. I had some left-over frosting in the fridge, so I used that rather than the icing in the recipe, so I can't provide any feedback on the icing, but we all liked the cookies very much.
