This recipe was my grandmother's. The cookies stay very soft

  1. CREAM together butter and sugar.
  2. ADD- eggs and vanilla.
  3. SIFT TOGETHER AND ADD TO WET INGREDIENTS 2 1/2 cups flour, baking powder, salt, nutmeg and few drops of lemon juice.
  4. Stir baking soda into buttermilk and add to mixture. Stir in the last cup of flour.
  5. Chill overnight. Roll out (1/4 to 1/2 thickness) on floured board. Cut into desired shapes. Sprinkle with sugar if you don't plan to ice them. Bake 8 to 10 minutes at 350 degrees.
