This is a family favorite (comes from my mother-in-law). It is especially good if you can find stone-ground white winter wheat flour. To reduce preparation time you can substitute oil for the shortening. We do this all the time and it still tastes great.

  1. Mix dry ingredients together.
  2. Cut in shortening.
  3. Add in milk, vanilla, and egg (slightly beaten).
  4. Stir just enough to remove lumps.
  5. In another bowl mix the second group of ingredients (brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, butter, and nuts). Mix well.
  6. Pour 1/2 of the batter in a 9" greased pan. Sprinkle on the brown sugar mixture. Then spread the last 1/2 of the batter over the top.
  7. Bake for 30 minutes at 375 degrees.
