Outstanding recipe. I use a Hormel smoked pork chop for the meat. I make this all the time! Many thanks for posting it.

When my boyfriend had his wisdom teeth out he couldn't eat anything but soup for the first 3 days. He requested split pea since its so hearty. This recipe was perfect. I didn't have a ham bone on hand so I just browned 2 strips of bacon that I chopped up very fine and cooked with the onion. I also used homemade stock to give it an extra richness. Yummy! Please thank Dean for me.

After the potluck at church for Easter there were ham bones and ham leftover and it was my job to come up with ways to use them. My Pastor requested Split Pea soup and being I can stand the stuff I went in search for a recipe. I title sold me on it and it didn't fail to be the Best Pea Soup. In fact because the Sunday I chose to make it my pastor desided to do a continental breakfast during service I left him a cool whip container full and he informed my husband it wasn't enough to please him, he could have ate the whole pan alone.

I made this tonight and it was wonderful. I used the ham bone and celery too. I also added thyme and a couple cloves of garlic. It cooked in about 2 hours to where itwas thick and peas were mushy and pureed like. Very hearty soup!

5 Stars no doubt. The whole family loves this soup. Even the fussy one. I've added more carrot as per her request. Turns out great every time. I beg people for their left over ham bones, so I ca make this healthy, cheap meal. My 14 year old says, I think we're the only ones I know that eat pea soup

I've been making this soup for a couple years now and every time I make it, I think "I really should rate it and let the poster know how much I appreciate this recipe!" well, after some delicious pumpkin bread - this is the recipe I came to review next! Absolutely delightful. I hated split pea soup until I had this recipe. Love it!

I won't actually rate this because I truly hate pea soup so I have no idea if this would qualify as the "best". However, it's apparently some kind of sin to make a ham and not make a pea soup (according to my mother) so that's what I did. This recipe made a ton of soup and we ate it the second day so it was very thick and kind of peanut butter like in consistency. My 1 year old LOVED it. Thanks for a super easy recipe.

This was delicious, even my 17 month old ate it up. The only thing I did not like about it was that the next day it got thick. I like my soup with more liquid. Anyway, I will continue to use the receipe because it is easy and yummy

Didn't have a ham bone so used a pkg of pork neck bones - about 2 hours into the simmering, I retrieved the bones & removed the meat that hadn't fallen off yet & returned meat & bones back to the soup. Since the soup seemed to be missing something, I added some chicken bouillon and that did it. Next time I might substitute chicken broth for some of the water. Easy recipe (my 1st time making split pea soup) & I thought it came out really good - no need to puree it. I liked it thick, even though some of the others thought it was too thick. But I'll definitely be making it again, especially the next time I have a ham bone. Thanks, Alan & Dean!

This is the BEST PEA SOUP EVER! I'm not much of a soup person, but this is so hearty that is works for me. And it really is better the next day!

Made this soup on the weekend and realized I had not previously rated it although I've likely made it 10 times...guess you can conclude I really like it! I've made many different pea soup recipes over the years and this is THE ONE...thick and filling and the old fashioned flavour makes it the ultimate comfort food. Thanks, Dean, and thanks for sharing it, Alan.

Tried this with our leftover ham bone from the holidays, but it lacked flavor. You might want to add a bit of apple cider vinegar and / or lemon juice to perk this up a little. I did and then added some cut up celery as well. Seemed to help. Try chicken (or veg) stock instead of water.

Wow! This was good. Of course I didn't measure anything. It's soup. I get chipolte peppers in adobe sauce at a Mexican store. I divide it into icecube trays and freeze. I added two cubes and should have only added one. Gave it a lot of kick. I used green onions because they needed to be used. Workd well. WILL MAKE AGAIN. Thanks for posting.

Cooked last night, along with scalloped potatoes and ham. (One high fat, one less fat recipe.) I used the outside surface of the ham. This was softened by cooking, and was less unsightly that if used in the light colored scalloped potatoes.
