I have served this soup to kids who hated pea soup and loved it. It's the chicken broth that gives it the depth. Talk about comfort food!

Ingredients Nutrition

  1. Trim fat off the ham bone.
  2. Rinse and picker over peas.
  3. Heat oil over med-low heat. Add veggies and saute until wilted (10-12 mins).
  4. Add peas and cook for 1 minute.
  5. Add remaining ingredients except salt & pepper. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until peas are cooked.
  6. Remove bone, bay leaf and thyme (if fresh).
  7. Shred meat, and return it to the pot, adding salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Times are approximate.

I'm not a big soup eater, but my husband and son LOVE soup. I followed the recipe exactly- except I omitted the salt because of the ham (glad I did.) They both loved this one, for me it was just okay. The warmth of it was nice on a snowy day. The chicken broth definately adds a lot of flavor (glad I added it.) Even though it wasn't my favorite soup, I'll make it again... it's a filling low-calorie meal. Thanks Chill for sharing it.

This is very rich and savoury soup. I omitted the leek and tarragon as I was out of both and used 3 Bay leaves and a shredded ham steak in place of the bone. Excellent! My daughter was a hard sell but she eats soup at day care every day - just jaded. Will definitely make again. Thanks for posting.

I used a ham hock, so I cooked it in the chicken broth about 1 1/2 hours before preparing the rest of the soup. My 18 month grandson loves split pea soup and has since he was old enough to eat. This was exceptionally tasty with the addition of the leek and tarragon.
