Just got finished making this for Christmas gifts. I made the recipe in the quantities of 1.5 (12 cups fruit etc). I also added a teaspoon of Ginger and about a half teaspoon of Nutmeg with the other spices as well as a Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract and a 1/2 teaspoon of Almond Extract. This Jam is awesome. Sweet but not cloyingly so with a very rich taste that smacks of Pears first, spice second. Making the recipe as I did, I got 6 half pints with about an extra 1/2 cup.
This recipe was EXACTLY what I was looking for. The jam was scrumptious. The only changes I made were to reduce the sugar to 2 cups, because my pears were very overripe and sweet, and I left out the ground cloves simply because I forgot I was out and it was too late to go to the store. Still tasted great. I can't wait to make it again.
Declicious and simple. Loved not using the pectin. Simmered for not quite two hours and it was perfect. It actually rendered eight pints for me....not sure why unless it had something to do with the type of pears so you have to judge for yourself how long to cook. A thermometer reading of 200 usually works too. But the little pops are music to my ears. This is my third batch so needless to say, this is a real winner.
I loved this jam! I plan to make it again. It turned out marvelous. I added the additional spices that JanetC-KY suggested (and a little bit more vanilla) and it turned out great. Very "spicy", but that's how I wanted it. I used about 9 cups pears and chopped them in my food processor - it was easier and faster than by hand. It yeilded 8 half pint jars. YUM!
Fantastic! I have been asked for this recipe many times! Everyone loves the jam!
First of all let me say I LOVE THIS RECIPE!! I had a few pears that were getting overripe and didnt want to waste them so I halfed this recipe (the first time). I didnt cook this as long as it says to cook it (I didnt want my chunks to cook to mush) it did not set up like it was suppose to. What I ended up with was this wonderful "syrupy" concoction that taste soooooo amazing on top of vanilla ice cream! We liked it so much I have made it twice more and labled it Ice cream topping! Thank you for posting. Maybe one day I will cook it the full time and try it that way too. :)
This was great, I change it some up some. But this is something you really need to try.
I had never had pear jam before, but decided this year I needed to do something with my pear tree. This recipe was so easy to make and is absolutely delicious. Thanks for the recipe.
I gave it two stars for the taste. I make it today, but it didn't get thick, like I thought it should. I also added a little ginger. It did taste good, but just didn't get thick, or syrupy.
This is a wonderful recipe, thanks so much for posting it! I had 9 cups of pears, used apple pie spice for seasoning, and because I was worried it wouldn't thicken, threw in an apple for good measure. I used 2 cups sugar and 2 cups whey low. It thickened beautifully after a couple of hours. I did give it a whiz with my emersion blender to smooth it out a bit, but not too much. I was so happy to find a recipe that didn't require pectin so I could cut back on the sugar. Thanks so much! I'm going to try it with peaches next!
