Spiced Meatballs and Gravy

The mustard and nutmeg really stand out in this dish. Wonderful served with mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles, or spatzel!

I'm so sorry to do this Yooper, but we had these for dinner tonight, and they just didn't suit our taste. The meaballs were certainly tasty and juicy, but the sauce was really bitter with so much nutmeg. Can I suggest to anyone else trying this recipe to add the nutmeg in the sauce a pinch at a time until you find the level you will enjoy. I had to laugh at myself as I faithfully added the "extra teaspoon of water" (wondering all the time what it did!) then realised it was probably the salt.

  1. Preheat oven to 350.
  2. In mixing bowl, combine onion, eggs, water, oats, mustard, nutmeg, salt and pepper.
  3. Add ground beef, mix well.
  4. Shape into 16 large meatballs.
  5. Place in a shallow baking pan.
  6. Bake, uncovered at 350 for 25 minutes or until no pink remains.
  7. Remove meatballs, reserve drippings.
  8. To make gravy, in medium saucepan combeine the meatball drippings, beef broth, prepared mustard, ground nutmeg, Worcestershire sauce, and pepper stirring until combined.
  9. Stir in 2 tablespoons cornstarch.
  10. Cook and stir till thickened and bubbly.
  11. Cook and stir 2 minutes more.
  12. Add gravy to meatballs and mix to combine.
