Southern Style White Beans

Recipe by LeslieBham

Down here in Alabama, Southern Style White Beans would be a main dish, usually served with turnip greens and a large chunk of cornbread. However, it makes a delicious side as well. Many love to top a bowl of these beans with corn relish, tobasco sauce, or clear pepper sauce. Even better the next day!

This is the recipe we use for white beans and pinto beans. When I can't find ham hocks, I use ham chips. Ham hocks are hard to locate in some areas. Sometimes I add 1-2 TBS of oil because ham chips can be very lean. Some southern friends will also add 1 TBS. sugar and a little bacon grease when using this recipe. I usually soak my beans overnight and cook them in a crockpot on high until tender. This is such a simple method of cooking dried beans from scratch and they are delicious. Thanks for posting this old-timey recipe.

Ingredients Nutrition

  1. Place beans in a large pot. Fill water to four inches over the beans.
  2. Bring to a boil over medium high heat on top of stove.
  3. Add ham hock or bone, salt and pepper.
  4. Reduce and simmer covered for three hours or until beans are soft.
  5. Add water as needed to keep beans covered.
  6. I have always eaten these beans cooked extra-soft but you may keep them a little firmer!
