Excellent! I love lima beans and like the first reviewer had never added garlic before. The garlic adds alot of flavor. Thanks for a wonderful southern recipe!

This is great. I have made lima's before, However I have never added garlic. Plus I have not cooked the Ham Hocks and the onion and garlic together. It sure makes a big difference. Thank You for the wonderful idea and the recipe.

My grandmother was from Louisiana and she made this with salt pork or picnic ham. My mother continued the tradition and now I am making it. I do soak the beans overnight, then in the morning I bring the beans to a boil, add a teaspoon of baking soda, and boil for 5 minutes. Then rinse them and return to the stove with just enough water to cover the beans. To that I add pieces of ham (usually a lot of ham) and boil them all day, adding water as necessary. The beans get really mushy, which is how I like them, and I wouldn't think of adding any garlic or onions or any other spices because it's perfect just the way it is.

Let me start by saying that I am not a great cook. So, when my dad requested lima beans for his weekend home...I panicked. I'd never made lima beans, red beans I had down pat...but not lima beans! I seached for a white bean seasoning mix in our local stores & found nothing. Then, I came here & seen your recipe...tried it and my dad was more than delighted. Thanks for a great recipe that was not only delicious but super easy! Can't wait to make this one again!Smiles :-) P.S. I was born & raised in south Mississippi & these beans are better than my mothers...shhhh...don't tell her! lol

Made this for tonights dinner. I added some celery and carrots. I used a very meaty ham bone and took your advice and served it with steamed rice in a bowl with the gravy. It was delicious. Definately a keeper. Thanks for sharing.

Smelled so gross I couldn't eat it. My husband had some and thought they tasted fine, but not his favorite recipe. I followed recipe to a tee.

I make mine about the same way, except I use 2 onions, 5 garlic cloves and 2-3 stalks of diced celery, I use a ham bone instead of hocks- not much difference. I serve my Lima's over homemade biscuits with a bit of fresh diced yellow onions with salmon patties- a winning combination.

Great recipe! I made this a while back and forgot to rate it. I followed the directions exactly and used 2 smoked ham hocks. My family and I loved it. Will make again.

Great Southern comfort food on a cold, snowy day for a transplanted Southerner trying to survive the winter in Michigan! Took me back to my roots...this is simplicity at its best. Also love that there is not a lot of added fat or salt (i.e. chicken broth). That keeps it healthy in addition to the great taste.

I didn't have any ham, so used bacon instead and used the drippings instead of the oil. It was delicious over cornbread- reminded me of my mom's ham and beans only better. Thanksfor the great recipe! I would never have thought to make lima beans this way.

My husband is in heaven! I did as the previous reviewer, serve them over cornbread. My husband is from Louisiana and requested this recipe. "I want it without any fancy spices" is what he said and this got 10 stars in his book.

I made this from a bag of dry lima beans and you are right. There is absolutely no need to soak them. I used a ham bone that I had in the freezer from Christmas with some meat still on it. I followed the recipe exactly, but I didn't serve it over rice. I just served it in a big bowl with a skillet of cornbread. Delicious! This is so flavorful and so easy. I will be making this a regular dish at my house. Thank you so much for sharing it.

Great Recipe! I made the beans with a leftover ham bone and some cut up ham instead of ham hocks. They were terrific! I think the garlic really made a difference. I served them as a side dish, but not over rice. Excellent!

OH my goodness that was soooooo good! I just had it for dinner tonight, and my dad, who is usually quite discriminatory, well he loved it just as much as I did. :D Wish we made more! I didn't have any ham hocks or anything like that on hand, so I used some salt pork, and that worked just fine. Thanks so much for posting the recipe! I just can't understand how so many folks think so poorly of lima beans... lol

Another great southern dish. Made it with hamhocks. The garlic took it right over the top. Had friends over and they wanted all the leftovers. This was great over rice with some hot cornbread..mmm mmm good.
