This is a very old recipe that is popular in my family. My grandmother made it when I was little and then my mother. It is not as sweet as other frostings and is cooked in a double boiler and because of this it stays soft. You put it on hot and sprinkle with chopped walnuts if you like and it is great. This should frost a 9x13 cake. If you want it real thick, half it again.
- 2 (1 ounce) unsweetened chocolate squares
- 1 cup water
- 3⁄4 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1⁄2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
- Put everything in a double boiler and cook till thick; stirring often.
- Put on cake hot.
- Sprinkle chopped walnuts.
