directions

  • Dice onion and add to the ground beef. (If using onion soup mix, blend well in ground beef.).
  • Mix and form into patties.
  • Fry the patties in skillet on medium heat until cooked to your liking.
  • I usually fry until they are medium-well to well done.
  • While patties are cooking, mix 1 can cream of mushroom soup, 1/2 to 1 cup water or milk, and brown gravy packet/mix in a bowl, stirring well.
  • After patties are browned and ready, add the soup mixture to the skillet. Reduce heat to simmer; spread the mixture over the patties and turn them once or twice as the mixture warms.
  • Stir mixture occasionally.
  • Simmer for 5 to 10 minutes or until gravy is good and hot.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, your choice of veggies, a good salad, hot rolls or bread, and a cold glass of iced tea.
  • Of course, this recipe can be doubled. Serving size depends on how hungry your family or company is! ;).
  • Kind of a "blue-plate" special!

  1. This was SO good, my favorite salisbury steak recipe by far. I put 1/2 a package dried onion soup in with the burger, and the rest in with the sauce. After browing the patties, I removed them then fried 1/2 lb sliced mushrooms in the drippings plus a bit of butter. (My ground beef was very lean.) I added the rest of the ingredients, simmered until thick, then returned the patties to the pan. I then topped each patty with a slice of colby cheese which finished it perfectly! I served on buttered noodles, but I think potatoes would go better with the gravy. All 3 of my kids enjoyed it too.

  2. My husband said that if this was/were on a menu in a restaurant he would order it every time! I did use 1 package of onion soup mix and I did add a jar of sliced mushrooms to the gravy. Served with noodles, steamed broccoli, and pickled baby beets. Thank you for a very good recipe. It is a "keeper".

  3. So easy to make and with such few ingredients it is just absolutely amazing! My kids love it and it also serves great with mushrooms and onions added. Must try.

  4. On 6/29/10, I made exactly what Michelles3boys's was making for her dinner( Well, I actually stole her idea :) ).I took her suggestion and added an egg ,then added 1/2 cup of bread crumbs. I also used the onion soup mix.Other than those changes, the recipe was made as written. And if you are searching for " comfort food " that is quick, easy, and tastes good then your search is over. This will be made more times than you can imagine. Thanks for posting and, " Keep Smiling :) "

  5. Easy recipe for simple comfort food. I used onion soup mix in the ground beef and probably more than 1 cup of water in my gravy. The meal was tasty, and we chose to ladle our gravy over buttered egg noodles. Roasted green beans were a nice side.

Tweaks

  1. Yummy! I used 2 lbs of ground beef and 1 packet of onion soup mix in the meat. For the gravy I used 2 bullion cubes and 1 can of water instead of the gravy mix. It came out awesome! Served with mashed potatoes and corn.

  2. I really enjoyed this hamburger steak. The only thing different I did was use onion powder instead of onions (my kids don't like onions). I made rice as a side, and the gravy was sooo good poured over it. This recipe has a permanent place in my cookbook. *Update* The last time I made this I mixed 1 egg and 1/2 cup of crushed saltine crackers with the ground beef. It made the hamburger steak very tender. I also used cream of chicken soup (because that's what I had on hand), and it was wonderful! You might want to use the lower sodium soup, because the gravy is pretty salty. Thanks again for your great recipe!

  3. I had a pound of ground beef to use up and this recipe sounded good. It was very easy to make. I followed the recipe exactly as written. I used the onion soup mix instead of onions and I used a cup of water. Everyone enjoyed them.

  4. This was total comfort food at it's best. Instead of using an onion, I substituted minced onions in the ground beef. Otherwise followed the recipe as written. Very delicious and came together quickly which is a huge plus. Thanks for sharing the recipe!

  5. Most excellent way to use up hamburger meat. My dear husband came home and when he saw what I had on the table ready for him he just filled his plate to the max. He ate til he was stuffed. He loved this recipe and said I needed to make this more often and than stumbled to the sofa for a nap. I made cream potatoes and green beans and garlic toast to serve with this dish. I used Knorr classic brown gravy pack and I put the onion in the gravy instead of the meat. It was delicious! I have been told to make again so its a keeper! :) Thanks for sharing your recipe mysonshine!
