Smorrebrod are open-faced sandwiches, made with just about any ingredients and usually eaten with a knife and fork. This is more a list of sandwich options rather than one specific recipe so ingredient amounts are an estimate. Use any of these combination suggestions or create your own with the ingredients you have on hand. Set out a smorgasbord buffet and let your family or guests make their own sandwiches! After going to IKEA the other day (& picking up some gravlax & pickled herring) I finally was able to make this the way I wanted to ~ including those choices on my buffet table with 4 of us making the sandwiches we wanted! I set out the entire list of ingredients & although I didn't go for the blue cheese, herring or gherkins, my other half thoroughly enjoyed them, while most of us were nicely satisfied with the shrimp, salami or salmon & the havarti cheese! Very interesting & enjoyable way to have fun making your own sandwiches, wiether VERY THICK or manageably thin! I also set out two loaves of bread, a dark rye & a pumpernickle! Thanks for posting this interesting 'recipe!' [Made & reviewed while touring Scandinavia with ZWT6]

This was such fun. I made half sandwiches of all options except the blue cheese (I'm allergic). My favorites were: prawn & lemon; herring and egg; and the smoke salmon and egg. Thanks for all the fun choices. It was indeed a smorgasbord! ~Made for ZWT6 Zee Zany Zesty Cookz~
