  1. In a large skillet, or slow-cooking pot with browning unit, cook beef with celery and onion until meat loses its red color.
  2. Pour off excess fat.
  3. In slow-cooking pot, combine meat, onion and celery with remaining ingredients.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours.
  5. Spoon over toasted hamburger buns or French rolls.

I really liked this recipe, it is very easy to alter for your family's particular taste. I don't like sweet sloppy joes so I left out the brown sugar and the relish and it came out perfect for our family. It also freezes beautifully. I take a silicone muffin tray and fill each "muffin" with the mixture and freeze. After 24 hours I take the "muffins" out of the silicone tray and place them in a large freezer bag. Each "muffin" makes 2 sloppy joes. Perfect for a busy family.

I didn't add the celery (didn't have any) but otherwise made as shown. This is my favorite sloppy joe recipe now, and I have tried a ton! My husband hates the ketchup taste you get with most sloppy joes, and the chili sauce made this one just different enough. It was a little bit dry when I put it in the crock pot, so I added about 4 oz tomato sauce. Delicious!

Made this last weekend to take camping. Did it in a pot on the stove instead of the slow-cooker; cooked it up before we left, cooled it, and then re-heated it over the campfire. Everyone loved it. Made the following changes: doubled the recipe (needed to feed 5 hungry adults, 1 toddler & 2 dogs), added 1/2 a red pepper (just because I wanted to use it up), subbed some ketchup for part of the chili sauce (1-1/2 bottles of chili sauce + 1/2 bottle ketchup), & omitted the salt (because there is probably enough already in the bottled sauces).
