Sloppy Joe Lentils (Slow Cooker or Crock Pot)

This is a semi-homade version inspired by the other sloppy joe lentil recipes here (thanks, guys!). This is for the 5-6 qt. slow cooker too. Hubby tried it and liked even though he's a carnivore. I made this one afternoon and froze half of the batch for another time. With a 6 qt. slow cooker, you can probably double the recipe easily (I ended up adding extra lentils to the recipe because I used too much water at first...ended up with 1.5lb. lentils and I still had plenty of room in my crock pot).

Ingredients Nutrition

  • 1 lb lentils
  • 3 (15 1/2 ounce) cans sloppy joe sandwich sauce (any brand you like)
  • 6 cups water

  1. Clean and rinse lentils.
  2. Place lentils in slow cooker with water.
  3. Cook on high for 2-3 hours (or on low if you will be gone during the day).
  4. Once lentils are soft, add in your canned sauce.
  5. Allow to heat through.

Very runny - next time I would drain off the excess water before adding the sloppy joe sauce.

This was very good for such an easy dish. I only gave it 4 stars because a homemade sauce would be more delicious, but this was very good for the amount of work. Based on other reviews, I was worried about it being runny, so I made 2 changes: 1. drain the lentils before adding sauce and 2. only use two cans of sauce per pound of lentils. That was MORE than enough sauce! I think 3 can's would have been way too liquidy. Thanks for the idea!

We LOVE this recipe! My husband wasn't sure but after he tasted it he was hooked. I add crushed garlic, onion powder, & chipotle spices when adding sloppy joe mix to give it a bit more kick. Yum!
