This is a delicious and filling casserole. When I make it, I omit the beans, and use about 4 carrots, sliced, that I cook in the microwave until barely tender before adding to the other ingredients. Add the onions--that's what makes it so good! (some ketchup helps, too!)
I always heard about this recipe and now I've tried it. I thought it was quite good. I was going to use carrots instead of the beans but didn't. I forgot to salt and pepper in between the layers. This dish I find is best eaten on the same day because it's not as tasty reheated.
