This is an old Scottish recipe for simple wholesome bread that requires no proving. I serve it with hearty soup or with a stew that has lots of gravy.

  2. Grease a l-pound loaf tin.
  3. Mix the flours, salt, baking soda and cream of tartar together in a bowl.
  4. Add the golden syrup and mix with sufficient of the milk to form soft dough.
  5. Turn out on to a floured surface and knead very gently.
  6. Place in the tin and cover with foil.
  7. Bake for about 50 minutes then remove the foil and bake for a further 10 minutes until the top is nicely browned.
  8. Turn out on to a wire rack to cool.

This was quick, easy, and great tasting. I will be making it again. Thanks!

I agree, this recipe is quick and easy, although the dough was a bit crumbly during kneading and needed more milk than the recipe called for.

PLEASE NOTE that this recipe (verbatim, other than converted units of measure) comes directly from the booklet "Scottish Teatime Recipes" (c), recipes compiled b Johanna Mathie, J. Salmon Ltd., UK.
