I used to make this when I was in elementary school for a yummy snack after school got out. I still love it today...26 yrs later.
These are so simple but taste so rich! It was like eating butter toffee candy but I convinced myself they were 'healthy' because they had oatmeal in them and I replaced the brown sugar with Splenda's brown sugar blend. I used the Scottish style quick oats (it was all I had) and they seemed to work just fine. This is seriously yummy stuff!
I made these on time back when I was a teen and until now I was never able to run across the recipe!! Thank you for this opportunity to experience the greatest taste pleasure of a lifetime!!
We loved these! Big hit w/ DD's boyfriend and the men in the family. I made them to serve with a pudding, and have enjoyed them the rest of the week with a cup of tea. I just LOVE the simplicity of this recipe. Next time, (and there WILL be a next time) I think I'll add a bit of cinnamon.
These were wonderfully easy to prepare - simple enough that I could even make them with half the kitchen packed for an upcoming move! I love quick and easy treats that can be made on the spur of the moment using items that are always on hand. The kids loved the very rich, crisp oat and caramel-type flavor, although the bars were crumbly enough to make serving and eating a bit of a challenge. (Would make great ice cream topping! ;o) If people have been wondering about this recipe, it's definitely worth a try, although do watch and don't overbake...I cooked them for 20 min and when I pulled them out the edges had bubbled and solidified enough to make it difficult to cut once it cooled. Check after about 18 min, especially if your oven runs hot. A great little snack recipe - thanks!
