My mother found this years ago at a Church Bizarre and it is wonderful on sandwiches, brats, hot dogs or even by itself!
- canned sauerkraut, well drained
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 1 cup chopped celery
- 1⁄2 cup chopped green pepper
- 1 teaspoon celery seed
- 1 cup sugar
- 1⁄2 cup vinegar
- Mix together saurkraut, onion, green pepper, celery, celery seed.
- Bring to boil and dissolve sugar and vinegar.
- Let cool then add to mixture.
This recipe was a big hit at a company BBQ! The brats tasted great with this relish on top of the onions and peppers steamed in beer. Even those co-workers who never had sauerkraut before like it. I did cut back on the sugar and used a 24oz jar of kraut. I am passing out the recipe to most of the staff!!
So simple yet delicious and versatile. Since it gets better as it sits keep some on hand at all times.
This is a great relish! I used it on a grilled sourdough bread with corned beef sandwich. Using what I had on hand, I used 1/8 cup chopped green pepper and 1/8 cup chopped sweet red pepper. I agree with TW that this gets better the longer it sits. What a great way to jazz up a sandwich. Thanks, Sandy One, for posting this recipe!
