It may seem like there’s a kooky made-up holiday for pretty much every day of the year (National Hairball Awareness Day is on April 29—seriously), but we promise this one is actually worth celebrating. To honor the most beloved of all seasonal desserts on National Pie Day, we turned to the experts over at Royer’s Pie Haven for a recipe for Southern staple buttermilk pie. Or, if you’re feeling lazy, head over to the shop’s West Campus location for a slice of flaky, creamy goodness.

Ingredients Nutrition


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Cream butter and sugar together.
  3. Add eggs, flour and sugar to mixture and mix thoroughly.
  4. Add buttermilk, nutmeg and vanilla to mixture and mix thoroughly.
  5. Pour into unbaked pie shell. Bake for 1 1/2 hours or until set and knife comes out clean.
