  1. Boil the raisins and 1 1/2 cups water for 5 minutes.
  2. Cool.
  3. Mix brown sugar, eggs, shortening, and vanilla.
  4. Add raisin mixture, flour, soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice (if using).
  5. Drop in greased cookie sheet.
  6. Dip in sugar if you want.
  7. Bake in moderate oven (350 degrees) for about 10 minutes, or until light brown.
