  • Preheat oven to 400°F.
  • Remove the 1st layer of skin from the onions. With a knife take off the bottom core end of the onion to give it a flat base.
  • Make two cuts in the top in a cross shape cutting 1/2 way through the onion (Do not cut through into quarters!).
  • Mush the butter and thyme together, and then push into the gaps of the onions. Season with a good pinch of salt and pepper.
  • Cook the onions tightly packed in a earthen ware dish on a light bed of sea salt.
  • Place in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes.

  1. These sound really good-It's Vidalia onion season-will try this recipe with vidalia's instead of red and see how it turns out. Yumm!!!!

  2. MMMMM! I halved the recipe and served as a side with Greek Pork Chops # 112915. The onions were sweet and the thyme gives them a nice flavor.

  3. This was pretty good, but after I took it out at 35 minutes, I knew that I wanted it more carmalized. I turned the oven up to 450 and cooked another 20 minutes.

  4. I like onions but my husband loves them almost as much as me, so I want to try this for him and see if he agree's that it is good thanks for the tip

  5. I love onions, too. And this recipe is an absolute must for all onion lovers. All others will be onion lovers after they have tried this one. The recipe is so easy - it is foolproof. But the outcome is delicious. The baking on salt gave the onions a wonderfull texture. Firm, but with a tasty moisture. The butter and the thyme add a fantastic flavor to the onions. These onions would go well together with any other main dish. But try them also as a snack or as a starter. My suggestion: Try them in any way. They are wonderful.

I live in Las Vegas. I was lucky enough to run into Recipezaar around Nov. 2000 and got hooked quickly. I am a cookbook collector and have been collecting recipes for as long as I can remember. My DH had to build in shelves for all my cookbooks! I like to dabble with OAMC and for a few years hosted the Budget/OAMC forum with some great people over there. Even though I don't work in the forum any longer I've set up a lot of cookbooks for the purpose of OAMC and stretching food that might be helpful. Please feel free to check them out! I go on food jags and cooking jags! Please come say hi to me and chat on facebook. I currently host a blog for saving money through finding deals and coupons if you are interested. Most of the time I try to cook and have a good dinner on the table but I'll be honest enough to say there is still fast food occasionally in the budget! I have had such wonderful support here whenever I need it. Thank you all for being here! Just a quick note on how I rate recipes: ? 5 stars - This recipe is perfect. (My DH is truly a critic and doesn't give 5's unless it's amazing) I would recommend it to others and would definitely make again. ? 4 stars - This recipe was good but I would change something in it next time. ? 3 stars - This is a recipe I would not make again but it was OK ? 2 stars - This recipe I would not make again and we didn't like it at all ? 1 star - This recipes did not work out/taste was unappealing and wouldn't make again
