Ranch Stew Aka Cowboy Stew

"This is one of my family favorites that I have made for years. It is super easy to throw together and contains ingredients that I always have on hand. When I make this I have to double the recipe because it tastes even better the next day! Ranch Style beans are a western style pinto bean made with a flavorful sauce. They add a lot of the flavor to this recipe so try not to substitute them if possible."

  1. I couldn’t find ranch style beans at my local grocery store. What should I substitute instead? I have pinto beans. Should I add more seasoning? Help?

  1. My recipe for Cowboy Stew is the same as yours except that mine calls for potatoes. The potatoes give the stew a gravy when they start to break down from being cooked. I don't think the recipe would be the same without the ranch beans and I add two cans when I need to strech the recipe. To give it an extra kick, I have used the ranch beans with jalapenos, but it is kinda hard to find them in the store. Thanks for posting!!

  2. I made this dish and my family LOVED it! I did a couple tweaks and loved the way it turned out. I seasoned the meat while browning it then added it to the crockpot and used ranch style beans, rotel, and a can of fire roasted corn. I added 1/4 of a cube of consmate (a tomato chicken bullion) to the crockpot when everything was added. We ate it on top of Fritos which added salty crunchy goodness. Will definitely make again!

  3. Great stew!! Simple and easy... Made it last night and we had the left overs the next day. We thought it was even better the next day. The only changes I made was to add about 1/2 cup of water and about 1/2 cup of tomato sauce because it seemed a little dry, also added a can of white hominy. After browning the hamburger meat, I put everything in the crockpot for about 6-7 hours on low... It was perfect. Served with cornbread and a green salad.

  4. Made this for a post football practice dinner and poured into crockpot on warm until we got back home. Followed the ingredients list to a "t" and I could only find the ranch beans at WalMart. I would consider using the Rotel's next time, as we like the kick they add. Regardless, this was a very tasty, way too simple dinner to prepare. Served it with corn muffins and fresh fruit. 5. Made this almost 2 1/2 weeks ago & was sure I'd reviewed it, but apparently not, so here it is! I followed the ingredient list pretty much on this, except that I left out the 1/2 teaspoon of salt 'cause it seemed there was plenty of sodium in both the can of tomatoes & beans! The stew was great for 2 of us for a meal & then for 1 left-over serving taken to work the next day! Did include the garlic because we both like that stuff! Thanks for sharing !
