Very tasty. No need to simmer for more than 30 minutes. The baking soda is needed to cut the acidity of the tomatoes.


  1. Melt butter in saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and cook until onion is soft.
  2. Add salt, basil, crushed tomatoes, red pepper flakes and sugar. Stir well and bring to a boil.
  3. Add baking soda and stir well.
  4. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes.
  5. Stir in olive oil.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
