  1. This was the original meatloaf recipe on the box. For a topping, mix 1 cup catsup with 1/2 cup honey and pour over top of the meatloaf before baking. I did this at first to get my kids to eat it, but now everyone always wants me to make it this way. The catsup/honey is good over chicken before baking, too. :)

  2. This was my Mom’s meatloaf and its still my favorite. I use 1/2 beef and 1//2 pork rather than just beef. This is good with chopped cooked red pepper as well. I do the loaf shape on a sheet pan to get rid of some of the fat. Speaking of fat, Mom covered it with bacon before baking. Ah, the ‘50’s.

  3. Best meatloaf! I'm glad to finally find this recipe! Made many yrs ago. Recently been "winging it" with correct ingredients & incorrect qty of ingredients. Thank you for posting this classic. It's great meatloaf & quick to make. Remember recipe on box suggested Heinz ketchup applied to top after taken out of oven!

  4. DON'T LISTEN TO THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS! Make the recipe as it. I used tomato sauce... it came out perfectly!!!!

  5. My family loves this recipe! I substitute V8 juice for the catsup and add a packet of Lipton onion soup.

Tweaks

  1. My grandmother made this all the time. She used some bell pepper and celery though, which I loved for the flavor and the bit of crunch. And always Worchestershire sauce and plenty of black pepper for a little kick. Oatmeal vs breadcrumb makes for a firmer meatloaf that holds together well in sandwiches, which was my favorite way to eat the leftovers. Makes me miss her.

  2. I too bake in open in 13 X 9" glass baking dish. Line dish with two strips of Heavy Duty Aluminum foil with 2 or 3" extra foil hanging over edge of baking dish. Use the foil strips to lift 'meatloaf' out of baking dish to cool a good 20mins on edged baking sheet to firm up. Foil also reflects heat to help brown all sides. Meatloaf is almost as wide as tall. More evenly cooks with foil reflection. Tasty..

  3. My family has made this for years. We use about 3/4 of a cup of finely diced onion and two teaspoons of garlic powder. I use Heinz Chili sauce instead of ketchup, and I recommend 90% lean beef. Also molding it into a loaf and placing it into a 13x9 baking dish assures the sides will brown.

  4. Use two instant oatmeal packets to easily add flavors like Maple & Brown Sugar...

  5. Awesome. I switched ketchup for Bbq sauce ?
