    LJ in San Francisco's Note:

These easy to make, chewy blonde brownies are always a hit at the Punahou School cafeteria in Honolulu, Hawaii. Rumor has it that these were also a big favorite of Barrack Obama when he was going to school there.

As a third generation Punahou alum (50th reunion this year!) I can testify that this recipe is very authentic. Nothing was ever added to the recipe by the cafeteria cooks -- no nuts, no chocolate chips, no more nothing (as we say in Hawaii!, ha ha). These were made in HUGE pans, and many of us begged the serving ladies to give us have one cut from the edge. That made for a nice chewy bar. Please be aware that your fingers will be kind of "buttery" as you eat these -- and that's part of the fun. I remember when the price went up from fifteen cents each up to twent cents each by the time I graduated. Well worth it, though. I just MUST make these for my granddaughter so she can relive my yummy days at the Punahou cafeteria.

Have made twice, plain and with choc chips. Would be good with nuts, especially pecans, or caramel. My oldest son specifically asked for these a few weeks after Christmas to be made again-not any of the other Christmas or other regulars!

These were everyone's favorites at Punahou--not just Obama's!
