  • Preheat oven to 350.
  • Cream shortening until soft in a large bowl. Gradually add sugar, creaming until light and fluffy. Add eggs and mix well.
  • Sift flour, salt, baking soda, and spices together. Reserve about 2 tablespoons. Beat the rest into the batter.
  • Slowly add beer and blend thoroughly; it may foam while beating.
  • Using reserved flour-spice mixture, toss fruits and nuts until lightly coated. Fold into batter, blending thoroughly.
  • Pour batter into a greased and floured 10" tube pan.
  • Bake at 350 for 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until cake tester comes out clean.
  • Cool in pan for 10 minutes; then carefully turn out of pan to cool completely. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  • Serve plain, dusted with powdered sugar or with a lemon glaze.
