Pizza - Homemade, Thick Crust

"I found this recipe in one of my Amish Cookbooks "Cooking with the Horse and Buggy People". It makes a soft, thick crust that my family loves. My seven-year old son rated it as "1,000 thumbs up". This is a doubled version of the recipe to make 2 pizzas. If you don't like an extra-thick crust, use 1/2 of this recipe for 2 pizzas."

directions

  • Preheat oven to 425 deg F.
  • Mix together all the dry ingredients. Add the warm water and oil, mix well. Knead dough a few times on a lightly floured surface. Put dough back in bowl, and lightly coat dough with oil. Cover and let rest or 5 minutes. While dough is resting, mix together all ingredients for the pizza sauce.
  • Divide dough in half, and press each half into an oiled pizza pan. Cook dough for 2 minutes, then take out and let cool. Put sauce then desired toppings on pizza. Cook for 18-20 minutes or until crust is lightly browned and cheese is melted.

Questions & Replies

  1. How large a pizza does this make? I need a 16 inch pizza. I was wondering if this recipe will make that large a pizza.

  1. I made this twice. First as stated and then again with some tweaks. It is a good base recipe but a bit bland. However with my changes, my family says its a five star recipe. First, I used a Wegmans Garlic and Herb Basting Oil instead of plain oil in the mix. Trust me its delicious. Then after I spread the dough onto the pan I grated some Parmesan onto it and cooked it for about 5 minutes before adding the toppings. You could also use a couple of tablespoons of brown sugar instead of the white sugar which I plan to try next time. Lots of flavor and with a crunchy outside and soft inside. Its a keeper!

  2. My 8th grade daughter made this for her FCS dinner assignment to make for the family at home. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised with the results. Easy to make bake. Great instructions. The crust turns out light ad fluffy (I rubbed one of the crusts with EVOO before baking). The sauce is pretty good. We will probably make it again cuz it is a kid friendly recipe. Thanks for posting.

  3. This was a pretty easy, basic pizza crust recipe. It was a little bit bland even after adding oregano, fennel and basil. I think it could maybe use something to up the flavor but a good recipe nonetheless. I made 2 pizzas out of this. One was a personal size pan pizza and the crust was so thick I could hardly bite into it. Used the recipe for Ultimate Pizza Sauce and the pizza was terrific. This was my first homemade pizza and I can't wait to try again.

Tweaks

  1. Garlic and Herb Basting oil instead of plain oil in the recipe. Brown sugar instead of white. Sprinkle or grate Parmesan onto the crust before cooking and adding toppings.
