"Papa John's keeps their menu simple. You won't find salads or subs or chicken wings on this menu. The company just sells pizza, with side orders of breadsticks and cheesesticks made from the same pizza dough recipe. With each order of breadsticks or cheesesticks comes your choice of dipping sauces. These recipes will show you how to make all three of those tasty sauces. You can use these as dips for a variety of products, or you can simply make your own breadsticks by baking your favorite pizza dough, then slicing it into sticks. If you want cheesesticks, just brush some of the Garlic Sauce on the dough, then sprinkle with mozzarella cheese and bake. Slice the baked dough into sticks and use the dipping sauce of your choice."
Special Garlic Sauce
- 1⁄2 cup margarine, spread
- 1⁄4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1⁄2 cup milk
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 1⁄4 cup Cheez Whiz
- 2 teaspoons jalapeno juice, from canned jalapenos (nacho slices)
- 1 (10 3/4 ounce) can tomato puree
- 1⁄4 cup water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 1⁄4 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1⁄4 teaspoon salt
- 1⁄4 teaspoon oregano
- 1⁄8 teaspoon basil
- 1⁄8 teaspoon thyme
- 1⁄8 teaspoon garlic powder
- Special Garlic Sauce.
- Combine ingredients in a small bowl.
- Mix well until completely blended.
- Place the bowl into the microwave and cook on 1/2 power for 20 seconds.
- Stir to blend.
- Makes 1/2 cup.
- Cheese Sauce Combine cornstarch with milk in a small bowl and stir until cornstarch has dissolved.
- Add the Cheez Whiz® to the mixture.
- Stir well to combine.
- Then place the bowl in the microwave and cook on high for 1 minute.
- Remove the bowl and stir until smooth.
- Add the juice from jalapeno slices, and stir.
- Makes 1/2 cup.
- Pizza Sauce Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat.
- Stir well as you bring the mixture to a boil.
- When the sauce begins to bubble, reduce the heat and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Stir often as it simmers to avoid sticking and to ensure an even mix.
- Makes 1 cup.
This garlic sauce is the closest that I've found to the real thing. Thanks for posting.
Loved this easy recipe. I used Fleishmann's 1/2 c. olive oil margarine and 1/4 teaspoon california style garlic salt. My husband and son thought it was just like the kind purchased at the pizza shop.
***If anyone would like a new pizza crust recipe to try, I use a recipe that is for Focaccia bread:
3/4 oz. active dry yeast (equivalent to 6 3/4 teaspoons~I buy bulk at Costco's)
1 1/2 cups lukewarm almost hot tap water(not boiled)
3 Tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
5 cups white bread flour (King Arthur's is great)
2 teaspoons salt
Using soup size spoon, mix yeast with 4 tablespoons water(it will get very thick and kind of clumpy, but don't worry..it will be fine when you add the rest of the water-doing it this way helps the yeast mix nicely with the water), then stir in the remaining water, then stir in the olive oil. In a separate bowl, mix the flour and salt together and make a well in the center. Pour the yeast mixture into the well in the center of the flour and mix to a soft dough(I use my hand). Put the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic(if any flour left in bowl, don't worry about it...don't add water to it, it will make the dough tough in spots; I know from experience). Place in a lightly oiled bowl(use olive oil), cover with a lightly oiled plastic wrap. Let dough rise till double in size(takes about 1/2 hour). I use the round pizza pans found at T.J.Maxx (and other places) that have the holes in the bottom for a nicer crust. Using 1/2 dough, roll it out into circle to fit the pan(the dough will be on the thin side~if you want it to be thicker, cook the pizza in 325 degree oven(it will rise quite a bit in a slower oven). If you like it thin/crispy like myself, cook it in 400 degree oven. I use Mid's pizza sauce, Sargento or Kraft provolone/mozzarella chesse blend, Bridgeford pepperoni(best I've found) and chopped: sweet red pepper, sweet onion, mushrooms. I brushed some of this garlic sauce along the edge of the crust before I put on the pizza sauce; it gives the crust a nice garlicy taste. Enjoy :) I love making my own pizza, it's cheaper, has better ingredients, and is healthier :)
This garlic sauce is about the closest that I have found. Close enough to the original if not exact. It does not need the extra salt as I have found in other recipes. This garlic sauce is a keeper. The next one to try is the cheese sauce as that is my favorite. No more spending the .75 per cup. We go through about 4 cups per pizza. That is an extra $3 we save/pizza. Awesome!! Thanks Dropbear!!!
