My grandma has been making this sans topping and bringing it to every family gathering for the past 3 years or so. Everyone loves it. My favorite version, that she brings for Thanksgiving and Christmas, is the pumpkin. She substitutes the pistachio pudding with instant pumpkin pudding and adds some pumpkin pie spice. It is delicious!
We have this recipe also except our crumb mixture uses 3 Tbl brown sugar, 2 1/2 tsp cinnamon, and 3/4 cup chopped nuts. Delicious!

Oh WOW this was good! I mean really really good! I used chopped almonds instead of walnuts or pecans (didn't toast them) and it gave it a marzipan flavor. I brought it to a family gathering and everyone loved it. I'll be making this many times in the future - thanks!
I have made this several years now for Christmas gifts. It is so tasty. My family and friends all love it. One variation is to make with French vanilla cake mix.
