I have been making this dish for some years now....finding it in the Bon Appetit archives. I did made one small change though.....in the original recipe it calls for hot Italian sausage, I used mild (personal preference). This is fast, easy and really good!
I made this as directed, but made a few changes. Instead of the diced tomatoes in tomato puree, I used a jar of roasted tomato Ragu pasta sauce. Instead of whipping cream, I made my own cream with boiled milk, powdered milk and butter. I didn't have fresh parsley, so I used dried parsley. I used whole wheat penne and added some cheese tortellini for a surprise. The only thing is that the sausage could have been better. I'm not sure if I got the wrong sausage because I wasn't able to remove the casings. If I did, it would have fallen apart. They were links in a package stated mild Italian sausage. Suggestions on this would be helpful since this is really why it only gets 4 stars. I served this with garlic toast with melted cheese on top and side salad with Italian dressing. The whole meal was a huge hit. I'm sure it will be even better tomorrow when the flavors blend together better. Can't wait!
This was easy, fast, and delicious...one to be repeated I'm sure. Because I made this with ingredients I had in the cupboard, I used red wine and 2% Carnation, but since the meal was such a success with these changes, I feel confident the recipe is a 5 star as written. This is awesome and so easy. My family loves this and my husband does not like pasta.
