Peanut Butter Bird Suet

"Want to attract your feathered friends? Want something cheaper and better than the suet blocks found in 'big block' stores? The birds go crazy for this! We get several species of woodpecker, bluejays, chickadees, nuthatches, blackbirds, snowbirds and others coming to taste our wares!"

• Yields: 4 blocks

ingredients

• 1 cup peanut butter
• 1⁄2 cup lard
• 1⁄2 cup suet
• 2 cups oatmeal
• 1 cup mixed wild bird seed
• 1 cup cornmeal
• 1⁄2 cup whole wheat flour
• 1 cup chopped cranberries or 1 cup raisins

directions

1. Melt the lard and peanut butter, and mix in the dry ingredients and bird seed. Often we mix in bacon fat, bread crumbs, Red River cereal, or whatever we have on hand. Work well together. Make into 4 x 4 x 2 inch blocks and freeze. Place in suet feeder in a tree and watch the birds come to feast!

If I could I would give this at least ten stars! My birds love it! At first I was disappointed in this recipe because of how often I need to add a new suet block! Just kidding, because the cost is so much less! My birds love it! I have woodpeckers large and small, cat birds, nut hatchers and blue jays enjoying this suet! I did a experiment of a store bought and this homemade suet and the birds chose this one! I am change suet blocks every other day now! Oh yeah, now I am getting Baltimore Orioles enjoying the feast! The only reason I have this one less star is because of the suet. It isn't necessary in my opinion! This works great with just the lard. And if you are missing some of the ingredients, it works out fine too as long as you DO have the birdseed and peanut butter to go with the lard. I routinely make this with just the lard, pb, seed and cornmeal and the birds still LOVE it. I agree that they do like it better than store bought blocks. I have a store bought block out right now that they only bother with when I have run out of home made!

I like this recipe because it uses both lard and suet, and exact amounts can be rough guesses. I follow this basic recipe, but usually end up with six blocks. Birdies everywhere thank you, Northern Reflectionz.

Never ever feed bacon grease!!! It is a soft fat that can get into bird's feathers and ruin their weatherproofing. Cold, dirty birds die from hypothermia and starvation.

Question: If I don't freeze this, will it be fairly soft? I have a couple big bird feeders that I stuff pb and seed mix into. Lard and pb would be a huge money saver.
