It is the ham salad of my childhood! Delicious. Like other postings, I pulsed all the celery, onion and ham in food processor. I substituted Trader Joe's cornichons for the hot pickles, and pulsed them as well. They added a nice spice element to the salad. Served it with toasted rounds of French Bread....
Made as written except I left out the eggs as I had none. It was delicious. Used Famous Daves pickle relish and it has a tiny bite but not much. I am chowing down right now. I am sure it will be better as it sits.
This recipe is fabulous! I stirred together the mayo and Dijon mustard in a big bowl and the food processor made quick work of putting the rest of this recipe together. (I did substitute finely diced kosher dill pickles for the hot relish due to personal preference.) In hardly any time at all, I had an amazing salad ready. This is THE QUINTESSENTIAL CLASSIC HAM SALAD!
Very nice and very easy. Had a bunch of ham left over from a previous holiday which was frozen awaiting it's next adventure. . .and this would be it! I am serving it atop rye cocktail breads at a graduation pot luck tomorrow night. Thanks for sharing!
Great recipe! I subbed dill relish because I couldn't find hot, served it in mushroom caps after removing the stems (first time trying that!), I also used 3 eggs instead of 2- I'm on a slow carb (no bread) diet and it tasted delicious! YUMMY! 5 stars :)
I made this tonight and it is really great! I used some kind of green tomato relish (in place of the hot pickle relish) that I had been given as a homemade gift and I think it was perfect. It may have even been hot pickle relish--I've never seen that in a store...
I have been making this recipe for years, and it is delicious.I add shredded cheese to mine and have not tried adding boiled eggs.I also make this recipe with leftover turkey which we love.Leftover roast beef works well also.
Carrie, This IS the real deal! ;) My mother-in-law makes great ham salad, and this recipe rivals hers! I made this with deli honey ham, vidalia onions and used sweet pickle relish (all I had on hand). This would be great served on sandwich bread or on crackers or celery served as an appetizer. I will definitively make this delicious ham salad again! Thank you for sharing, carrie sheridan : )
This was my favorite lunch box sandwich when I was a kid. My mom made it from the leftovers whenever we had ham for Sunday dinner. She put everything through the grinder attachment of her stand mixer. I can still see her feeding those ham chunks through the grinder. No food processors back then folks! She used sweet pickle relish, but did not add eggs. What a treasure it was to unwrap those delicious sandwiches! On fluffy white Kilpatrick's bread, lots of mayo and a crunchy leaf of iceberg lettuce. Um, um. um. Nothing ever tasted so good! I think ham salad is a Southern thing, since ham was so often on the menu for Sunday dinner. None of my California classmates ever had a ham salad sandwich. Poor souls. It was part of my mom's Southern heritage. Gosh, were we kids ever lucky! What a lovely memory. Thanks, Paula.
This is so delicious! It has that perfect tart/sweet contrast that just makes it one beautiful sandwich filler. I'm always looking for new ideas to fill sandwiches as my OH gets bored, now we can add this one to the rotation!
