From ehow.com -- Homemade orange extract using peel from navel oranges, vodka, water, and about a week to steep! Substitute lemons or limes for a different flavor -- Place in small bottles for gift giving! If you make this, try it in Candied Ginger Pound Cake With a Hint of Orange, or include a copy of the recipe with the gift bottle of extract --
- After thoroughly washing a large navel orange with soap to remove all pesticides, dirt, and germs, carefully remove the peel without disturbing the white pith! Chop peel finely in food processor ~ Place chopped peel into a sterile jar and top with boiling water and vodka.
- Cool to room temperature and store covered in the cupboard for 3-7 days before using as orange flavoring.
- After a week, strain into small sterile bottles. For gift giving, tie each bottle with ribbon and a tag marked "orange extract".
Very easy and economical! And tastes good too! I am looking forward to trying it with lime. Used in some muffins and worked great. Made for Spring 2011 PAC game.
I've used this for years and wanted to post it, but luckily checked on zaar if it's already posted :) This is much cheaper and better than any artificial flavoring. Thanks for posting!
I tried this and also used for lemon and this was great. My Daughter wanted to know where I bought the extract and when I told her I made it she had to see the recipe. She was amazed of how good it was and for such a lot of money saved. Thanks for the recipe.
