directions

  • Heat a 9-10 inch frying pan (medium size) over moderately high heat.
  • Form the ground beef into two patties.
  • When pan is hot, sprinkle the salt and pepper in the pan, and place the meat in the pan. Quickly brown the meat on both sides.
  • While the meat is browning, combine the hot water and the soup mix.
  • When meat is brown on both sides, turn heat to high, and pour in soup and water mix, scraping the pan to free any bit that may have stuck to the pan.
  • Add the thyme and Worcestershire sauce if using, let the liquid come to a boil, then cover and lower heat to medium. Simmer for about five minutes, covered.
  • While meat is simmering, combine flour and water very thoroughly, until it is completely liquid - this can be done by shaking them together in a jar.
  • When meat is done, remove from pan and set aside, keeping warm.
  • Slowly whisk in the flour and water mixture to desired thickness - you may not need all of it - and simmer gravy for two minutes on moderate heat, where it will thicken a bit further.
  • Pour gravy over patties to serve, and accompany with mashed potatoes, rice or noodles for that delicious gravy!

  1. It was very good, fast and easy! Though I will continue my hunt for a favorite choppped steak recipe, this one seemed to be missing something, not sure what!

  2. This made a good, quick, weeknight meal. I followed the directions exactly, but felt the meat was missing a little flavor. We really enjoyed it though. I served it over egg noodles.

  3. I made this dish exactly as stated. The gravy was good but the meat was a little dull. I would suggest added something to the meat, but I don't think I would make this again.

  4. This was super easy, and so good. My husband gave it 4 stars, but only because he likes his meat medium rare, and felt it was overcooked. He loved the flavor, though. I normally do not like gravy, but tried it because it smelled so good...it was awesome! I did not include the thyme. I sauteed some fresh mushrooms in butter and added those before the final 2 minute simmer. I served over extra wide egg noodles. Yummy! I bet it would be just as good with homemade mashed potatoes. Thanks for a great, easy recipe.

  5. This is the best tasting chopped steak ever! This is definitely a recipe to win over your man's heart! I made this tonight for dinner and my husband couldn't tell me enough how much he liked it! And it's so easy to make! The only ingredient I substituted was the flour for cornstarch to make the gravy. And of course I used 1 lb. ground round, so I was able to make 3 patties. I served it over wide egg noodles and made green bean casserole. Thank you Jaywalker, for this wonderful Oniony Chopped Steak recipe! 5 Stars!!!!! Chef #303356 (Nancy)
