Old-Fashioned Homemade Ice Cream

Total Time

This old-time ice cream recipe was actually my great-great-grandmother's recipe. I've tried a lot of different homemade ice cream recipes, but this one always stands out as my family's favorite!

Ingredients Nutrition

  1. Beat egg yolks with half of sugar and all of flour. Mix until creamy. Add evaporated milk then add rest of sugar and vanilla.
  2. Beat egg whites until fairly stiff. Fold into above mixture. Put in ice cream freezer and add whole milk, leaving about 1 1/2 inches at top of freezer.
  3. Freeze in ice cream freezer. Makes 1 gallon.

i used half & half rather than whole milk and it's really quite tasty. if you eat it right away, it pretty much tastes like chocolate soft-serve. not sure how it will be after it freezes/hardens. definitely easy enough to make though!

I am so glad to be the first reviewer for this yummy recipe - AND Susan's first review EVER! I didn't have any evap milk on hand so I used half & half, still came out great! Easy to make and this is definitely a regular dessert now at our house. I served this with Lee Lee's Famous Chocolate Sauce(recipe #19678)and the combo was unbelievable! Great recipe, Susan. Welcome to 'Zaar!
