These are absolutely delicious. I used ground chicken and ground pork. As one reviewer recommended I added a little ground ginger and a little orange zest. Used 3 lbs. of meat and only doubled the sauce. The ratio of sauce and meat was just about right. The sauce is sooooooo good!
We really enjoyed this! I cut the recipe in half. Goes together in a snap! Omitted the liquid smoke. Made for Zaar Chef Alphabet Soup Game.
Great! I skipped the liquid smoke...just didn't have any. Used more tomatoes and pasta sauce to make it a bit more saucy for spaghetti. Thanks dave!
I loved this recipie. I changed a lot though ( insert red face). Not on purpose. When I first read this recipie I read the first ingredient as pasta not pasta sauce and I was using this as a appetizer so I ignored the first ingredient, pasta sauce, compltely. I then added 1/2 c. diced onion, 1/2 cup sweet and sour sauce, 1/2 cup sweet n spicy bb sauce. I only used 8 oz. apple butter, because it was all I had & I used 2 14.5 oz cans diced tomatoes. I drained one and I used the juice and all in the other. It came out great and was a hit. MY 3 year old loved it over rice with a side of veggies and my very picky party guests were annoyed when they were gone. Thanks!!
Wow! I was looking for a variation on the standard sweet meatball recipe -- it seems like everything on here calls for grape jelly & chili sauce or cranberry sauce and chili sauce. But that was just too sweet for my taste. Using the apple butter was perfect! Very sweet -- my 2 year old loves it -- but not disgustingly so that adults run the other direction. I didn't have any liquid smoke, so I added some worcester sauce instead. I also added a bit of leftover marinara sauce and used a can of chopped tomatoes instead of fresh ones. But the meatballs I made from scratch, using ground beef, chopped onion, rice, egg, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. LOVE IT! Thanks so much for posting this recipe.
I made this for Christmas and the family just raved about it. I also started making just the sauce and have it with pasta...it's so much more enjoyable than plain pasta sauce out of the jar!
Absolutely wonderful meatballs, taste even better when they cook longer. My 3 year old son loves them, says they are better than mommy's hahahaha. Again have eaten them after Dave cooked them. Danielle
