Norma's Poppy Seed Bread

"This recipe makes 2 loaves of delicious bread. People come to Norma's to just buy this bread. Norma's has three locations in Pensacola, FL. This bread is really good! After Nimz's review, I had to add...I usually half the poppy seed amount...I can't afford to use that many poppy seeds...however, Norma's original recipe, and the one that people line up for, has the full cup in the two loaves!"

  1. This was tasty, but not 5 star worthy IMO.

  2. I only made 1 loaf and it was delicious. Made for hubby's work and they're gonna love it. Made for I Recommend Tag Game 2010.

  3. Wow, this quick and easy to make bread is delicious breezer. My dh & I both enjoyed the flavor and texture of this poppy seed treat, very much. I made 1/2 a batch and ended up with a lovely, big, moist loaf. Made exactly as written and I wouldn't change a thing. So happy that I tried this and I will be making it again. The dh has already called dibs on the last of the bread for his lunches this week. Made for Best of 2015.

  4. Made for the FF&F Best of 2015 Game as a fave of Annacia & for guests because I had everything on-hand for the recipe. My only issue (unrelated to the recipe) is that pan sizes here in Iceland rarely conform to most US recipes. I had only 1 loaf pan measuring 11 ½ x 4 ¼ x 2 ¾ in. The internet seemed to verify that std US loaf pan size was 9 ¼ x 5 ¼ x 2 ½ in. I got creative & ended up w/2 cakes as shown in the pics (a larger spring-form bundt type & a smaller one DH & I used for our taste test). Bake times were mostly guesswork & relied on a wooden skewer test for doneness, but I probably over-baked the smaller size as it was dryer than the larger one. Like several reviewers, I reduced the amt of poppy seeds to a full McCormick spice bottle that measured slightly more than ½ cup. All that said, this cake is fantastic & joined my Best of 2016 list in its early stage. My guests asked for your recipe as they often do. Thx for sharing this keeper w/us.

  5. I cut the recipe in half to make 1 loaf and added some almond slices just to use them up and I really liked that addition. This makes a lovely moist bread that slices beautifully. A real pleasure with both tea and coffee. I wish I had made both loaves to have another one in the freezer. Thanks sweetie for another great baking recipe. :D

Tweaks

  1. I made this using half and half cream in place of evaporated milk and reduced the poppy seeds down to 1/2 cup and I increased the vanilla to 1 tablespoon, with those few changes these loaves turned out wonderful, thanks Breezer!
